Important information for Bell customers about calling 9-1-1 from Apple Watch Series 3

Sep 22, 2017

MONTRÉAL, Sept. 22, 2017 /CNW Telbec/ - Bell customers with the new Apple Watch Series 3 should be aware that their longitude and latitude location may not be supplied to 9-1-1 operators when the device is not paired with their iPhone via Bluetooth. However, in the event of an emergency, 9-1-1 Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) will contact Bell Mobility to obtain required longitude and latitude information.

This is a Bell network issue that affects only Apple Watch Series 3 users connected to the Bell Mobility LTE network. Bell's Network team is working closely with its technology partners to resolve the latitude and longitude issue as soon as possible. Customers with questions are invited to contact us at 310-BELL.

All other Enhanced 9-1-1 (E9-1-1) functions are available on the Apple Watch even when the devices are not paired, including the ability for 9-1-1 operators to receive the caller's telephone number and location to the nearest cell site.

Bell reminds all customers calling 9-1-1 from their wireless devices to remain calm and speak clearly. Identify which emergency services you require – police, fire or ambulance – and be prepared to provide the following information even if your device is equipped with E9-1-1 capability:

  • What is your 10-digit mobile phone number?
  • What is the location?
  • What is the emergency?

Please note that not all PSAPs in Canada are equipped with E9-1-1 capability.
