Bell program helped divert more than 494,000 mobile phones and 80 metric
tons of batteries and other accessories from landfills

MONTREAL, Quebec, June 2 /CNW Telbec/ - Bell Canada announced today that
it received the 2008 Phénix environmental award in the category of
Réalisation-Entreprise (Achievement - Corporation).
Recognizing projects combining protection of the environment, economic
development and social progress to promote sustainable development, the Phénix
was awarded to Bell for its Mobile Take-Back Program.
"We are thrilled that Bell is being recognized for its ongoing and
profound commitment to protecting the environment," said Marc Duchesne, Bell
Canada's Director of Corporate Responsibility and Environment. "The program's
success is not only the result of Bell's efforts, but also those of our
clients and our partners and consumers who have supported the Mobile Take-Back
Program."
Launched in 2003, the program encourages Bell Mobility clients to return
their used phones rather than throw them away. The number of mobile phones
recovered per year has increased from 50,700 in 2004, to more than 260,000 in
2007, and the total recovered is more than 494,000.
Bell donates $1 to WWF Canada (World Wildlife Fund) for each unit
returned at one of its drop-off sites. These donations help support the WWF in
its fight against climate change.
Used mobile phones can be brought to any Bell World store or returned by
Canada Post free of charge, regardless of the manufacturer. In October 2007,
Bell joined forces with Desjardins Group with a view to expanding the
program's scope. Caisses Desjardins, Desjardins Business Centres and other
components of Desjardins Group have made drop-off sites available to their
members, customers, employees and the general public in more than
480 locations in Québec and Ontario.
